If you or one of your kids is interested in the world of radio-controlled (RC) boats, you may want to check out the Model Yacht Pond adjacent to the Paradise Point Resort and Spa on Vacation Isle in Mission Bay.
I happened to be there on a Saturday afternoon when the San Diego Argonauts, an RC Sailing Club, were having a series of quite competitive races. Apparently, they do this nearly every Saturday (you can check their calendar on their website). I’m sure that others can use the pond without having to be in a club; you just may have to steer clear if there is a club event in progress to avoid interfering with each other.
The pond is about the size of a football field (200 feet wide by 800 feet long) and sits in the middle of a beautiful city park where you can have a great picnic. On the south side of the pond, there are several concrete picnic tables, grills, and two public restrooms. A number of mature trees give plenty of shade.
